what most people usually ask...
What's your show format?:
The best way to find out is to listen. My Friday show is usually alternative, punk, indie, rock, with occasional moments of classic rock, dance, techno, hip hop and pop. And, yes, even Leif Garrett.
Do you play local music?
If it's good, definitely. But, please, if you are in a band and you request yourself repeatedly or have your friends and family call twenty times in one show to request the band, I won't play you. It's annoying to have people who aren't even listening to the show call and request, sometimes demand, I play a band. If your fans are obnoxious when they call, tell them to calm down because I won't play it (and neither will most of the other Radio X DJs).
Those type of callers aside-I really do love my callers-the ones that like to talk music or about the old local scene or about how much they like Radio X or just call to say hello. They all rock.
Are you a Communications major?
No, since NSU doesn't offer a Communications major. I really never intended to be a DJ and it's not my life long career dream. It's really something I stumbled into.
How long have you been a DJ?
For many years. During the summer before my sophmore year in high school,
my brother's friend was the station manager at the radio station. It broadcast on cable back then (meaning no one could really listen) so I spent some time there over the summer, messing around in the booth. I never left. I stayed there through the rest of high school, through a brief stint at another local college and through a few years in the "real world," working. I enrolled as a student at NSU and stayed on as a DJ. During my first two years as a student, I was the public relations director for the station and then the station manager.
Is Jenocyde your real name?
A friend of mine was joking around and called me that for awhile and it kind of stuck. Some people assumed I was talking about the real "genocide," but I am all about unity. I love everyone. So, to let people know that my name was not some political racist thing, I created the tag line "broadcasting the systematic annihilation of boring radio" from rewording the official definition of "genocide" in the dictionary. I threw on the "DJ" to explain who I am and the "Gurlee" (pronounced girl-e) for no reason.
When are you going to leave the station?
I'm not sure yet. I graduate around the end of 2003, so it'll probably be then or sometime before then.
What music are you into?
I don't trust people who say that they are into "everything," but I sort of am. Ok, my top five couldn't do without (in no order): Sloan, the Pixies, the Ramones, Operation Ivy and the Replacements. But that doesn't even come close to covering it. I'm into almost anything 70s, retro pop, cheesy bad love songs, 30s/40s pop, punk, indie, old country, glam metal, rap. And Leif Garrett. I guess it's easier to say what I don't like - jazz, most blues, new country, Zeta rock (ie Creed) and some of that scary death metal with the gutteral noises.
What's the deal with the 'writings' part of this site?
That's an area for family and friends. So, if you think you are one of those, email me and maybe I'll tell you the password.
